Kobe Luminarie – The return

  • December 22, 2009 1:53 pm

This is a continuation of my previous post. I re-visited Luminarie (I always thought it is called Luminaria) and I tried to take as many photos as possible. This time I have been concentrating on two things – details of the decoration (patterns) and the general picture – the crowd, the animation, the feeling.

Just in case you never heard about Kobe Luminarie – it is a light festival, which was created to commemorate the Great Hanshin Earthquake from 1995. There is no entrance fee but but you can see a few money collection boxes on your way so you can leave a hundred (or few hundred yen) if you want. I always leave two or three hundred yen as I would like the tradition to continue (there were some rumors last year that this will be the last Luminarie but fortunately these were just rumors). Another interesting detail(  from Wikipedia) is that all the lamps are individually hand-painted!

I will start with the first part – the details:

And here are the “big” pictures – the people, the mood:

This was my last post about Luminarie 2009. From here aftert  iis only Christmas Japan. A little bit difficult task though as in Kobe this year indeed the Christmas decorations seem to be scaled down (I should have had browsed Tokyo for more Christmas  pictures or may be I will have to go specially to Osaka or may be Nada-Ku Christmas houses :) ).
