Sorakuen Garden (Autumn Leaves and Chrysanthemum Exhibition)

  • November 23, 2009 4:13 pm

A very nice traditional Japanese garden 15 min walk from Sannomiya or 10 min. walk from Motomachi JR stations (just walk straight toward the mountain from the Motomachi station and ask somebody after 10 min. walk – you will most probably be next to it). The garden was created in 19 century but completely finished in Taisho era (1912-1926). The best time to visit it is of course the Koyo (autumn leaves viewing) season (in Kobe this are usually the last two weeks of November till the first week of Decemeber).

Here are some of the photos:

And here is the video (more are coming soon):

Funayakata (the last “Kawagozabune”)

is the most beautiful of the buildings you will see inside the garden. Here is what you can find written about it in garden booklet (with abraviations) : “This building known as “Kawagozabune”, was originally part of a houseboat that was used for pleasure cruises by e feudal lord in Himeji, and is thought to have been constructed between 1682 and 1704. The structure consists of of a two story wooden building with a gabled roof thatched with layers of Japanese cypress bark. All of the wooden sections of the building have been treated with lacquer and the ends of the horizontal beams and rafters are decorated with gold leaf. The building is highly regarded for its delicately decorative styling.

This is the last “Kawagozabune” in existence and here it is (during the day):

And during the night (Yes, I know it is tilted. I am still learning how to take night photos:)):

And for the lovers of the detail:

By the way the garden was opened during the night by exceptipon (just because of the Chrysanthemum Exhibition and the autumn leaves viewing). Otherwise they close it at 5 p.m.

And finally:

The Chrysanthemum Exhibition

We found very similar last year in Osaka castle so most probably this is a local tradion. InOsaka castle thoughI don’t remember seeing any Chrysanthemum bonsai and in Sorakuen there were many. Here is one of the most beutuful bonsais:
